Sizing: Getting the Numbers Right

Standard double driveway gate openings in the UK tend to fall between 2.4 metres and 4 metres wide, with most domestic driveways sitting around 2.7 to 3.6 metres. Gate height is typically 1.5 to 1.8 metres for a standard property, though taller gates - up to 2.1 metres or beyond - are common on larger plots and period homes.

The measurement that matters isn't your opening width. It's the clear opening between your posts or piers after accounting for hinge throw, hardware and the gate reveal. Get that wrong and you're either trimming timber on-site (bad) or ordering again (worse).

I've put together a separate measuring guide that walks through this step by step - How to Measure for Driveway Gates. If you're in any doubt, ring me directly. I'd rather spend twenty minutes on the phone than have a set of gates arrive that don't fit.
